Its capacity to climb around walls and trellises, reaching for the sky, shows optimism and the determination to realize its full potential and dreams. Clematis are clever flowers that are adaptable and resilient, becoming more beautiful and impressive with age. The Japanese saw it as a symbol of moral beauty. Purple Clematis symbolizes beauty, elegance, grace, and unfailing love. This is our hope for the Alam Atelier child.

The Reggio philosophy is based upon reciprocal, respectful relationships which emphasize the valuing of the opinions, viewpoints and interpretations of others and the importance of adults and children learning together. (Thornton & Brunton, 2015)

Relationships are crucial and fundamental for children's learning and development because they provide children with a sense of security, trust, and belonging. When children feel safe and supported in their relationships, they are more willing to explore, take risks, and engage in meaningful experiences. Positive and respectful relationships among all stakeholders also foster empathy, respect, and cooperation, as children learn to communicate, collaborate, and problem-solve together.

Relationships also refer to one between the child and the physical environment, called the "third teacher," as it is intentionally designed to inspire and provoke children's curiosity, exploration, and engagement. Projects are not pre-planned by the teachers but are child-led, as they follow the interests of the children. The project work is an inquiry-based model that may include Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM). It is also a play-based model that enhances literacy, numeracy, creativity, and social-emotional skills, which are essential for the holistic development of the child.

Project work uses imaginative, innovative skills, research, hypotheses, and investigation, often in real-world scenarios. Children gain important knowledge and practical skills when they solve challenges and problems that they encounter in their project work. Documentation is making learning visible, promoting communication and collaboration, and supporting assessment and evaluation processes.

We carefully curate, display, and document children's thoughts and progression of thinking, making their learning visible in many ways: photographs, transcripts of children's thoughts and explanations, visual representations (drawings, sculptures, etc.). Through documentation, children's learning, areas for development, skills, strategies, processes, interests, strengths, and understandings are made visible and shared with children and families to enable them to interpret, reflect upon, evaluate, and co-construct the meaning of experiences.

Communication and collaboration between teachers, parents, and children is enhanced through documentation. It invites dialogue and the exchange of ideas about learning experiences. It allows children to reflect on and present their learning to a wider audience, helping to build their communication skills and confidence.

Documentation also acts as a form of assessment and evaluation. It helps educators assess children's development, understanding, and capabilities. It provides evidence of children's learning outcomes and helps educators make informed decisions about their teaching practices.

CRAWLER & WALKER

Learners here are generally from 6 - 24 months

This program nurtures the young learner's relationship with his surroundings and the wider world. Emphasis is given to exploring the senses, creative expressions, music, movement and nurtuning relationship.

Our youngest learners learn and discover through continuous immersions in things of nature. All materials used in this class are natural and safe.

PRE-NURSERY & NURSERY

Learners here are 2 to 4 years old

This program relies mainly on expressive art that allows young children to experience their world in various ways. The focus is not on the final product but on the creative process of initiating and revisiting interests through different media.

This class uses project-based learning following the children's interests. Literacy and numeracy concepts are introduced and mastered in a manner that is fun and easy to understand, such as through songs, actions, art and stories, as well as through their project work.

It also highlights interpersonal and social development through play and collaborative engagements. The classroom environment and culture encourage independence and self-care.

KINDERGARTEN & PREP

Learners here are 4 to 6.5 years old

This program uses inquiry-based learning that involves long-term projects. Literacy and numeracy are essential tools for learning and are practiced through the real-life context of investigating a project. 21st Century skills such as collaboration, communication, problem-solving, creative and critical thinking skills are all developed in an atmosphere of play and discovery.

Alam Atelier Bali

Set upon the lush fields of Canggu, Bali, our learning spaces are filled with natural light and fresh air. Discoveries can flow freely from the indoor setting to the outdoor areas. The beach is less than a kilometer away.

The wide outdoor areas invite learners to explore. Water play, mud pools, seedbeds, and woodworking are some of the features that appeal to the senses and stir curiosity.

The school buildings are beautiful reflections of the culture it is set upon. The learning materials are mostly sourced from the community with the genuine intention of supporting the local artisans. The learning spaces are mini-ateliers that promote either loose parts play, clay exploration, crafting, and even woodworking.

Our Light & Shadow Atelier is outfitted with a variety of LED lights, projectors, and light tables. The Computer Lab provides desktop units for research, coding, and computing. It also features an Augmented Reality Sandbox and iPad units to support the children's exploration. The Music Atelier provides a variety of percussion, strings, and woodwind instruments sourced locally and internationally.

Our outdoor garden, named Jendela Alam, is designed by Rusty Keeler, a nature playscape designer in the USA. There will be mud-play, sand-play, and risky play with age-appropriate challenging obstacles. Always bring extra clothes; your children will not want to go home!

Saung Jati, our tree house
It provides an imaginative sanctuary where children can pretend-play, lost in open. ended creativity, as they create stories and engage in cooperative play with their friends.

This is where our artworks, creative innovations, and project works are acknowledged, respected and exhibited. Showing not only the end result, but also the work in progress,allows our children to gain sense of achievement, share their experience of their creation process, and collaboration within the community.

Under a skilful Atelierista, our children are exposed and encouraged to express their individuality or collective work using open-ended loose parts and natural materials. Following the children's interests, educators are to assist with endless project works that are bound to be explored, allowing inquiry-based learning which includes Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM).

Project work and open-ended learning allows children to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, imaginative, innovative, collaborators, be researchers, and investigators, which are all important skills in real-world scenarios.
